Health Inequalities

Understanding health inequalities
The term “health inequalities” refers to the unequal health opportunities and outcomes experienced by different groups of people within society. The term is often used as a way of identifying between those inequalities that are either avoidable or regarded as unfair in some way.

In a fair and prosperous society, everyone should have the same chance to lead a long and healthy life and enjoy the same opportunities for leisure, health care, education, employment, safe environments and warm affordable housing.

Living Well in Cheshire East: a call to action
Living Well in Cheshire East: a call to action is intended as a call out to those with leadership responsibility in public, private and in voluntary and social organisations to come together to identify new ways of working, share their experiences, energy and resources and lead the way in supporting communities to find long lasting and meaningful solutions to the challenges which they face.

The purpose of the call to action document is to:
reinforce the message to partners that tackling entrenched inequalities is everybody’s business
invite partners to sign up to a Statement of Intent to commit their organisation to look at new ways of working in partnership to tackle the differences in health outcomes which exist within Cheshire East, with an emphasis on the wider or social determinants of health
set out a clear definition of what we mean by health inequalities
show examples of the health differences between the best and worst areas within Cheshire East
promote the Living Well approach as the building blocks for partners to sign up and work to in the future, as outlined in the North West Health & Wellbeing Alliance publication Living Well Across Local Communities: prioritising wellbeing to reduce inequalities.
set out 10 key challenges for the future and invite responses, as part of a Consultation, on how best to tackle these locally

Living Well in Cheshire East: a call for action to reduce differences in health Conference, 12th November 2010
Friday 12th November 2010 saw delegates from a variety of cross sector partner organisations attend the Living Well in Cheshire East: a call for action to reduce differences in health conference at The Tytherington Club, Macclesfield.

The conference brought together expert national and regional speakers on health inequalities to present on the latest research, policy direction and examples of good practice. Key note speakers included Dr Mike Grady from the Marmot Review Team, Liam Hughes and Trevor Hopkins from the National Healthy Communities Team at Local Government Improvement and Development

This conference was a call to arms to our local partners to reignite work on reducing health inequalities and the beginning of local action to secure sign up to and implementation of the Living Well approach as outlined in the North West Health and Wellbeing Alliance publication Living Well Across Local Communities: prioritising wellbeing to reduce inequalities.
